Chapter 1: The Beginning

Shelby Apodaca

Hey there! Welcome to my little piece of the internet 🌎, Iʼm so glad you could stop by. I hope you have a little time to chat, I have something I want to tell you.

Have you heard of the term Girl Boss? Well I am a “Girl Boss”, I get to run my own show. I set my hours, I tell myself what to do and when to do it 💁🏻‍♀️. Sounds to good to be true doesnʼt it? Well Itʼs not!

Iʼve been fortunate enough to have an incredible support system on my journey 💪🏻, when I decided to start Touch Of A Feather, It wasnʼt exactly a planned out idea. Yup, Itʼs true, I started my shop on a complete whim.💡

All those business professionals would say that it was a careless act of a child 👶🏻, and maybe they are right 🤷🏻‍♀️. Yet here I am, 4 years later and Iʼm still going. Not only have I grown in my craft, but I have also learned a whole heck of a lot along the way. I would love to share my past experiences and my current journey with you, my new friend.

Every week I will post a new blog 📖 to tell you about The Chronicles of a Girl Boss, the good the bad and the ugly. I am going to be 💯% honest with you, because why would I lie to you? Being your own boss is hard work, you need a lot of motivation and a darn good phone📱 .

Would you like to know why I started Touch Of A Feather? (Other than the fact that it was on a whim) I realized one day, that there was nothing else that I wanted to do more than create beautiful art 🖼 and spread it around the world. I didnʼt care how it happened, I just knew I wanted to make it my reality 🙌🏻.

When I attended my first event as a vendor, It was the most magical experience 💫 I had the chance to enjoy. It was a tiny show in the middle of nowhere, but it was a life changing moment for me. When people would come up to my booth at first I was really nervous, socializing was never my strongest suit 🙈.

While I was standing there all sorts of awkward, I got to see these people look at my creations, something that came from my own two hands 🤲🏻 and they loved them! My bags were compared to the bags from Thirty One 👜, I couldnʼt believe it, that was an amazing compliment. Even though I never did sell any of those bags, I still use them for myself, and everywhere I go, I get a ridiculous amount of compliments for them 💕.

Watching them grab a pair of earrings and hold them up to their ears 👂🏻, or even consider using one of my dog bandanas for their beloved poochie 🐶 made my heart swell with joy 💓.

Now folks, that is why I do what I do. That day showed me that I was doing exactly what I was meant to, I opened up out of my shell 🐚 , I talked to every single vendor, I walked around and met people and shook their hands. Suddenly I was a whole different version of Shelby that I had never seen before 🙌🏻.

Every day since then I work harder 💪🏻, I learn more 🧠, and I strive to continue to grow as a person and as a business woman 👩🏻‍💻.

Once the show was over, I realized I learned a couple of things:

1. Minimize the amount of display items 📝

2. bring sunscreen for out door events ☀️

3. wind sucks 💨

I participated in about 5 other events that year, and I still look back with a smile on my face, that was a summer I will never forget, it was the one that changed my life.

When winter 🌨❄️ came along I knew it was time to slow down, we live pretty far out from the city, and during the winter, the roads can be miserable. So what did that leave for Touch Of A Feather? I had a website that I had built on Storenvy.com but no one had purchased from the website, despite all my efforts of advertising with my trusty business cards!

Then came the research, Pinterest is just about the most magical place on the internet, you have a question, forget about google lets go ask Pinterest!

I discovered a bunch of different articles 💻 discussing how social media 📱can be a powerful tool in your business. And thatʼs when I found it, an article about a woman who made a name for herself making hangers for weddings. I will never forget that article (unfortunately 🙁I did forget the name of the shop) that article taught me that I can be successful also! I learned a few tidbits about how to market and I couldnʼt wait to start 🏃🏻‍♀️

I told myself, If Iʼm going to make this happen, I have to eat, breathe, and sleep Touch Of A Feather, and thatʼs exactly what I did 👌🏻.

Next week I will tell you all about my Social Media of choice, and how I couldnʼt imagine ever running my business without it!

Until then, check out my photos from that summer below:
